Nancy Rossignol is the Ambassador of Belgium in Zagreb, Croatia, shown here at an official ceremony commemorating the Holocaust at Jasenovac,  which is located approximately 120 kms from the capital.
Croatia commemorated yesterday the largest detention and work camp  (1941 – 1945) because it was on April 22, 1945 that out of 1073 prisoners, 600 broke out and barely 100 of them survived the breakout. The remaining 473 who did not attempt to escape were killed or burned, according to reports by Croatian television.
Since March of this year, Belgium is presiding the Task Force for International Cooperation on Holocaust Education. Hence the important role of the Belgian Ambassador at the commemoration ceremonies.

  2. We must never forget the horror of the Holocaust! With so many of the leaders we have around the world today, I suspect that it's possible that it could happen again! Great post for the day, Anni!

  3. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. This camp and the breakout are new to me.
The breakout on April 22, how sad, so near the end of the war.

  9. Hi Judy and Dina, it is always interesting to learn what happened elsewhere. not so far from Belgium.

Certainly hope not, Sylvia.. we do have watchdogs now, international organizations which did not exist in the 1940's.

    Inderdaad Bets

    We agree, Gracie.

  11. Our President spoke on the Holocaust today. Such a sad and horrific period of time. I've read many books on this, each one as bad if not worse than the one before. I just finished a memoir, Clara's War, One Girl's Story Of Survival. It was about a young Polish girl who was hidden by a German ethnic family during the Nazis occupation and how she and 17 others were hidden underground for 18 months in the most primitive conditions. One of the saddest books I have ever read!

    Thanks so much for sharing!

  12. Hallo Anni,
    Groetjes,
    Frans

  13. I knew about Jasenovac but I did not know there was a break out. I will have to investigate that and blog about it. Thank you for this post. Holocaust an genocide education and prevention is a topic that is very important to me.

  14. Kris, it is true that so much has been written about this but Clara's War sounds like a special book and well worth the read.

    jammer toch !
