Approaching Kemskerke

Jacques Brel sang about "Le Plat Pays" and I drove through it today after I left Ostend. Klemskerke is typical, a beautiful little village in the Polders not far from De Haan/Le Cocq.  Its windmill from 1693 and its restored church (picture 2 if you look carefully) are protected monuments. "The flat land at its best, where quiet country roads invite walking and cycling. Klemskerke is a very old polder village. The first written document in which the town is mentioned dates back to 1003".

Magritte - Brel - La Mer du Nord

Jacques Brel and René Magritte are always present at La Mer du Nord. On a sunshiny day like today and the last few days,  life tastes sweet.

Le Plat Pays

On the way back from my little excursion to the coast I photographed through the car window the flat country celebrated in Jacques Brel's song "Le Plat Pays". I love this part of Belgium - flat country side with open verdant fields traversed by beautiful canals lined by trees, wonderful also for biking and horse riding. I guess that one of the reasons I like it so much is because of its connection with Jacques Brel. He sang in both French and Dutch.
I think you will enjoy listening to "Le Plat Pays", one of my very favorite Brel songs, here:
