Meeting Walter in Charleroi
On the way back home from my mini-holiday in Italy, I had the pleasure of meeting fashion designer Walter Van Beirendonck.
He was waiting for his luggage at the Charleroi airport. As he was such a good sport to us paparazzi who recognized him, I asked him how he felt about traveling being a celebrity and he answered that this is just part of the game.
I also did ask him for permission to take his photograph but forgot to mention that I had a posting on This is Belgium in mind. I assume and hope he will approve.
Walter graduated from the Antwerp Fashion Academy in 1980. Together with Dirk Van Saene, Dries Van Noten, Ann Demeulemeester, Marina Yee and Dirk Bikkembergs, he became known as one of the Antwerp Six, a group of pioneers and very influential fashion designers who graduated from the Antwerp Academy in the period 1980-1981.
You can read more about Walter Van Beirendonck and have a look at his collection on the link below.

Ciao, che bella opportunità hai avuto!
ReplyDeleteBuona domenica, Antonella
I've never heard of him but looked at your link. He is very talented. Good spotting!
ReplyDeleteHow lucky for you! I've never heard of him but will pop over and take a look at the links you have furnished.
ReplyDeleteYou would make a great paparazzi because your approach is so different from the usual ones who take camera shots without asking or thinking about how it would feel to have your privacy invaded. I'm sure he certainly wouldn't mind you sharing his photo on your blog. :)
Have a great day! :)♥
Thank you Kristie, I appreciate your compliment even though I am not sure that everyone would agree with your thesis.
DeleteMr Van Beirendonck will be happy with the USA attention he is getting, I am sure and therefore will hopefully not mind!
Have a great day yourself, also!
Op een koele keer krijg jij toch een eretitel, Anni... 'Cultureel Ambassadeur, This is Belgium' !
ReplyDeleteLie(f)s.
Sedert cultuur een regionale affaire is, Lies, beleef ik er plezier aan het op een 'hoger' niveau te brengen -;
DeleteZo'n pittige eretitel zie ik trouwens wel zitten -;
Nog een prettige zondagavond.
Congratulations on meeting the designer Walter.
ReplyDeleteUnfortunately, I do not know him.
I cordially greet.
wow, he seems quite the character!
ReplyDeleteI will need to take a look at his collection! :) He looks like a very friendly guy, so i can't imagine he'd mind receiving this attention! Fortunate that you ran into him. I love his beard. (He probably hears that a lot.) Great post, by the way.
ReplyDeleteHe has a friendly face and would certainly be recognized in public. What a delight that he allowed his photo to be taken and I am sure that he would be pleased to see your fine post about his talent.
ReplyDeletebises,
Genie
Yes, Genie, a delight, I am very pleased. Glad you think my post is a fine one!
DeleteThank you for the link! A very interesting person indeed.
ReplyDeleteHallo Anni,
ReplyDeleteEen markant figuur!
Groetjes,
Frans
een bijzonder figuur, kan je niet naast kijken.
ReplyDeleteExcellent! So nice that you could make a portrait op him... He is really so interesting.
ReplyDeleteWell done, Anni!
daar kun je moeilijk naast kijken ...
ReplyDeleteeen mooie ontmoeting Anni
prettige dag
DeleteWhat a sport! I wish I were less shy but I am learning more and more to take photos of people. I've mastered asking them, now I just need to calm down and take a decent photo.
ReplyDeleteEmm, all that can happen is that they say 'no'...
DeleteOften, people are totally flattered.
Walter was indeed a great sport and I had fun talking to him.
Thanks for all those links Anni...interesting post....I had heard about the Antwerp Six but not specifically this designer. Will now enjoy going thru the links....in preparation for my trip next week!!!! A bientot.
DeleteWalter looks like a wrestler ! Nice to meet friendly people !
ReplyDeleteHmm is anyone еlse еncountering pгoblems with the іmages оn this blοg loaԁіng?
