City bikes
last photo by Chris
City legs and city birds, lead me today to "city bikes".
Somehow, in student town Leuven (Louvain), bikes sometimes just happen to end up in the river Dijle.
I have always known about it but was never able to actually see or photograph the phenomenon until this year because of exceptionally low tide, a consequence of riverbank works.
They must be either stolen bikes, thrown in the river after a short ride by the thief, or the result of student activity... students who might or who might not have had a bit too much Belgian beer.
The environment organization cleans up the river in Leuven twice a year and on the average they come up with 300-500 bikes.

leuke post!!!! sommige fietsen zijn een ondierbaar einde beschoren. groetjes, Hilde
ReplyDeleteJa zonde van al die fietsen om ze weg te gooien.
ReplyDeleteThe last photo is worthy of Halloween.
ReplyDeleteHow interesting. Is there any way of tracing the owners? like through a registration?
ReplyDeleteA little sad!
ReplyDeleteOh my. I love this post but how sad! What forlorn and abandoned little bikes!
ReplyDeleteAt least it's not shopping trolleys...
ReplyDeleteIt's really sad to see that kind of "big" debris cluttering streets and rivers and beaches! I once thought it was mainly here in the US that we had so many people who cared little about the environment, but I guess they're everywhere these days. Hope you have a good week, Anni!
ReplyDeleteBrugge kent dezelfde plaag, Anni !
ReplyDeleteTientallen in de reitjes, elke keer weer...
Lie(f)s.
Hallo Anni
ReplyDeleteZonde van al die fietsen, maar ja het gebeurt overal.
Groeten Bets
Ziet er bekend uit. Dronken studenten die met hun fiets in de Dijle sukkelen.
ReplyDeleteGroetjes,
Filip
wow, that's a lot of bikes in a year. how big is the city? I've seen quite a few 'dead' bikes in Berlin too. what a waste!
ReplyDeleteGreat post, and wonderful pics! That is A LOT of bikes. Wow! I wonder if it IS all the great beer? :D
ReplyDeleteOh dear!
ReplyDeleteHallo Anni,
prettige dag
My word, that is a lot of bikes to find in one year! That last bike looks pretty rough, almost like it has the dredges of the river hanging on it! HAH :)
