I really like the idea of celebrating "Thanksgiving" and have always wanted to introduce this wonderful tradition in Belgium. Tomorrow I have invited friends to a typical meal of turkey with all the trimmings (stuffing, sweet potatoes, cranberries, pecan pie and ... maybe Belgian beer and chocolates?). The celebration is about giving thanks and enjoying family and friendship. George Washington issued the Thanksgiving proclamation in 1789 and Abraham Lincoln turned this special day into a national holiday in 1863. Do you agree that it is worth giving it a try over here too ? Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could have another day off in Belgium also, just to say 'thanks' ? I wish you visitors who are celebrating tomorrow a very happy Thanksgiving.
Au Québec comme au Canada, nous avons la fête de l'Action de grâces, célébrée d'habitude le deuxième lundi d'octobre.
ReplyDeleteSa signification n'est pas la même que la « Thanksgiving », qui est une fête purement américaine.
Il est curieux également de remarquer que, comme en beaucoup de choses, le sens de l'Action de grâces n'est pas le même au Québec que dans le reste du Canada.

DeleteJe connais bien la fête américaine et je googlerai un peu pour mieux comprendre les différence avec votre fête de l'Action de grâces. Le nom déjà a un aspect plutôt solennel, non?

DeleteI think everyone should celebrating Thanksgiving. In America, it is officially about the pilgrims and all that but most people get together to be thankful for food and family and friends.

I think it's a wonderful idea that Belgium have its own Thanksgiving. :) And of course you should add the Belgian beer and chocolates! That could be the special Belgian touch! Have a beautiful day of thanks with your friends!
